Smile Hey

Hey,

I'm SO lost! I didn't even know if I should start a new thread to post my intro!

I've visited a few PV forums, this one is VERY nice! Although I haven't been here long, people seem very friendly and read-this-first welcome doesn't read like I should get a lawyer to review it. This is my first post on any of these type forums.

I've been an analog smoker for 30ish years, stopping for a year or two, here and there, throughout my life. My husband is an analoger, too, for about 15 years. He is more motivated to leave analogs behind, maybe I'm just more rebellious, never the less, we are both wanting a viable alternative.

In December of '09 we started exploring snus, snuff, and twists. Although interesting and a nice change, I have found that I really want the inhaling aspect. After a month I have found that I have nearly doubled my nicotine levels by combining various forms. Well now, that wasn't the plan!

Our work place is going to be "Non-Tobacco" in July. Yeah, not non-smoking, it's a "non-Tobacco Policy". So that shoots most alternatives out of the water. Except of course for big pharmaceuticals (and we work in a hospital!) who would profit greatly from this ban by "patching" us all. We have a large number of tobacco users at our facility. So this would be a big plus for us to be vapers.

At this point in my search, I'm thinking I want to get two different vaporizers. I foresee us getting more, as we find likes and dislikes, in whatever two I decide for our first order. (I seem to be in charge of the research, I get into studying new things.)

I think I've narrowed down to two of these, the Joye V3, Screwdriver, 510, or the DSE901.

I would like is to find vaporizers that have as many as possible, interchangeable parts. I'm currently studying Jim's pdf (which is how I got to this forum) to see what I can find about interchangeability of any of these models.

I'm not wanting anything that looks like an analog, I think I'm favoring manual (but one auto would be okay), I want to refill my own carts, I want to spend less than $200 for 2 set ups, and I want to spend less than $100 a month to keep us going. Oh, and peace on earth.

I can only read so much about what it's like for others who vape, at this point, I'm just going to have to jump in and do it.

I'd love to hear any experiences, thoughts, opinions, and links to further information.

Thanks!

my suggestion is to go with a manual 510 ,mega batteries, pass thru from jason at electro nix stix one of are approved suppliers he is a stand up guy and will help you should you need the help. he has plenty of pre made juice, and when your ready he has a base nic that you can use to further bring your cost down. each person is subjective to there taste but your on the right track. expect to need at least 5 attys for each person a month until you know the in's and out's of each persons use. keep em wet /dripped and nitely drains and you should be just fine also read up on Cleaning / lengthening the use of the atty's . also with manuals be careful not to over use the device without a cool of period.

Welcome to the group and good luck in your research there is plenty to read.

Hi Bacawind,
Welcometo ESF.

Glad you felt comfortable enough here for this to be your first post.
We are a friendly bunch and have a wealth of experience here amongst our Staff and members. You will in time find that a lot of users are a bit biased about the particular product they use. So it all just boils down to personal preferences.
Some models perform differently than others, some produce a dry vapor more like a cigarette, while others may taste a bit wet, but produce more flavor. A 510 will give you a dry vape, while a penstyle or a 901 will produce a wetter but more flavorful vape. As for the Screwdriver, this model uses the same atty(s) 901 as example. The difference here it uses bigger off the shelf batteries. Hence this model is more considered a battery mod than an e-cig model.

I am one who would recommend a manual switched e-cig as the automatics, though do work, are very easily flooded with e-lquid and can cause the switch to stick or short out. With a manual switched battery, this is not possible as there is no air hole for fluid to be able leak into the battery. A stuck or shorted auto switch is a very common failure amongst novice e-cig users. As overfilling a cart will inevitably cause this to happen.

Another thing to keep in mind when making your decision is battery life.
For instance the 510 which happens to be one of my personal favorites is a high performance atomizer on a small battery. So It would be advisable to buy an extra battery. If you tend to do some heavy vaping, having an extra battery or two will come in handy. But now you can buy larger batteries for the 510 which makes it a bit longer, but will give you a longer use between charges.

I also like the penstyles, preferrably the Joye302, these are basically the same as the 801 or RN4072, and the batteries and atomizers from any one of these three models are interchangeable.

I am sure others will be ringing in here shortly.

ESF wishes you all the best in your search. We have all been there at one time or another.

Passthrough + inline box or not. I don't understand this and I'm not sure how to word it for a search. We are on our computers all day, so a usb charging thing is a must, probably a few. I don't understand the difference regarding the inline box.

One end goes into the usb port, the opposite end is the battery on the pv? And the inline box charges yet another battery?

Gee zoo! I hadn't even thought of multiple attys, I was just thinking carts.
Thanks! Back to studying.

One end goes into the usb port, yes the usb male side
the opposite end is the atty on the pv not the battery? yes think of it as a battery connector plus atty with out the need for the battery.
And the inline box charges a battery? yes if equipped the purpose of this is to insure a certain power is provided to the atty on old 1.1 usb slots as well as to act as a surge protector for the usb port. most devices are 3.7 volts and around 1 amp give or take. but there are devices that run 5 volts 1 or 2 amps.

also consider your nic level requirements it is a good idea to start as high as possible and step down just dont go higher then needed or to high

That's good to hear. Since I don't really know what I'm doing anyway, I might as well get two different types pv, to see what we prefer.

I understand it's all a matter of opinion, but in your opinion, why is the 510 dryer than the 901? Battery size? mAh? Battery compared to atty? Is it as simple as length?
Thanks

Some atomizers will give a wet tasting vapor, I have no other way of explaining it, while others like the 510 the vapor will taste dry, more like the taste of smoke from an analog. Why does the 510 taste dryer than a 901? I suppose it is probably due to the lower resistance of the 510 which is typically around 2.5 ohms which means it runs at higher amperage and therefore runs a bit hotter, but this does not make the vapor taste hot. Also this results in flavor not being as pronounced or strong in a 510. For my likes, I find that a lot of the flavors are too strong or intense for me. A slightly less strength of flavor is to my liking.

This is something else to consider. There are so many flavors, and to me only a few fall in to a category of an all day vaping flavor. While others are nice for a quick treat so to speak, they are not flavors I would want to use all day, everyday. Companies like Johnson Creek which is american made smoke juice, offers a sample pack of all the different flavors they sell. This gives the consumer a chance to try them all without investing in larger amounts of what they may or may not like. For a new e-smoker, I would recommend shopping around for e-lquid in these smaller quantities, untill you find the flavors you truely like.

A standard 510 battery is 180 mah, for me when chain vaping I may get an hour or two at most between charges. The new larger 510 mega battery is 280mah. I can go heavy on one of these for 3 to 4 hours between charges. This 280 mah battery is the same mah of the much larger penstyles.

Welcometo ESF Bacawind

I'm wondering with your upcoming non-tobacco policy if it wouldn't be a more wise choice to perhaps look into something along the lines of a Joye "Stick" or another mod. This way it would not resemble or be mistaken for a "cigarette" with it's "not even close to it" design, and would certainly prevent workplace altercations of possible misunderstandings.

On the other hand, they "are" more expensive for an entry level PV, so your commitment level would need to be sound to avoid wasting money unnecessarily should you find that vaping is not for you in the end (lol, but that chance is rather slim in my opinion).

Since your policy isn't coming into effect until July, this at least gives you some time leeway to "experiment" with a less expensive device for your vaping entry.

Even though some of the non mod styles don't resemble a cigarette appearance, with the l.e.d. on them, the way that you hold and take a draw off of them, along with the exhaled vapor, chances are that they will "still" be mistaken as a cigarette simply by the action.

I commend you for actually doing some potential buyer research for a device that will meet your criteria, and not just jumping right in with a purchase as many have, only to find themselves disappointed in the end with their choice(s).

I offer you the best of wishes with what you (and your group), finally decide to begin with, and I'm quite sure your approach will prove beneficial when all is said and done.

Please DO keep reading up on your choices, and feel free to ask any questions along the way. I'm sure you'll find us quite willing to answer any questions we're able to through past experiences and learning curves. And should there be something we are not certain of ourselves, we have no issue in referencing other information or steering you to other suggested resources.

VapeOn,
Greg

Welcome Bacawind I also work in a hospital that went no tobacco.I did the same thing went through snuff and dip and snus.I started vaping with the intention of just using it at work and smoking in the Free world. To my surprise vaping met and exceeded my needs and I have not smoked in several months and have no intention to go back.I have also turned on a few freinds at work to the Joye 510's and they are very happy with them.We keep a low profile and do not vape where it might cause controversy .The hospital also allowed me to get the no tobacco rate for health insurance.Good luck and enjoy.

Howdy Bacawind.
First I would like to suggest to add a city & state to your profile. You may have neighbors close by to give you "personalized" help. (Not totally necessary, but may help you.)

These are my personal preferences and opinions, so don't take them as "Written in Stone"

I've been using passthroughs heavily since I travel for a living, and spend a lot of time in hotels, and rental cars.
1.) Even though my lap top is always handy, I shy away from using the USB ports. An accident with a bad PT may damage my puter, so I carry 110v & 12v adapters.

2.) PT's with batteries have been disasterous for me. Never worked long, and only outputed 3.7v. I ended up cutting out the battery boxes, and using the full 5v from the adapters.

PV Types;

1.) I found my favorites were the RN4081 & 510. My Brother in law prefers the 901 & 801. (It's all a matter of preference.) With the availability of adapters, it's now possible to get a few cheap adapters and try different attys.

2.) We both prefer battery mods. We're using the 14500 3.7v AA size. They last for days, compaired to hours on a stock battery. (And are much cheaper.)

3.) We both use the Protege as our main "Portable" PV's. They are both serving us well. I bought a DSE905 Mod to try because they're very inexpensive, but are also cheaply made. I haven't used it enough to comment on its performance.

Just my personal preferances, as I mentioned.

My wife was in ICU for a week last year, and the staff had no objections to me vaping in her room. I was willing to go outside, but they said "Why bother, you're not smoking" it was pretty cool.
