I just joined too - I'm actually waiting for my starter kit to arrive next week in the mail. Like you I didn't want to lay out a bunch of coin only to find out that vaping was horrible and nothing like actually smoking, so I poked around until I found a mall near me with an e-cig kiosk, the company was "smokeless for life" or something like that - it doesn't matter anyway as they were super expensive (I knew this from checking prices online before going there,) so I wasn't going to buy from them. I just wanted to sample one. I did and it was pretty close to the real thing in terms of that "throat hit" you get from smoking a cigarette. The taste was a little off but it was close enough that I knew this was something I could actually do, as I really want to get off of actual cigarettes. I am happy to hear from others online that these mall e-cig vendors generally have the worst tasting stuff too, so that's good news as well - in that I'm optimistic that the kit I receive will be even more "authentic" to smoking a Marlboro light than the mall e-cig was.

I would suggest that - try and find an e-cig vendor in a mall kiosk near where you live and sample one. I understand that most major cities have at least a couple, but you'll need to do some googling to find one.

I would never pay more than $50.00 for a starter kit unless it was an Ego type.A starter kit should have a charger ,two batteries ,at least one atty preferably two or a box of five cartomisers.Joye 510 's ,KR808's and DSE 901's are available and parts are available from many places so you are not going to be held hostage and you can shop around for price.The Ego type use the 510 atties or cartomisers they are just a more deluxe battery.You will have to just try liquids until you find something you like .None will taste like a real ciggerette but they all will deliver the nicotine you are addicted to and they all will give you the hand to mouth routine.The mall kiosks have some very high rent to pay and they have to make a living so they will be a lot more expensive than someone who is running an online store and has the benefit of volume and lower overheaad and labor.The online people can afford to be a little friendlier and honest as well .

AwesomeVapor,Electronicstix,VaporTalk,IndyVapor,Va porStation or VaporKings are a few I have used and trust.Watch out for the cheapest as you might end up with low quality knockoff.The prices are about average at the sites I listed and they tell you who makes what they sell.They also will answer any questions you may have by email in a prompt fashion.
