I quit on February 26, 2009.
I had smoked upwards two packs a day for over 35 years. I had caught either a bad cold, or the flu, I don't know which it was. Anyway, I kept craving a cigarette, but every time I tried to light up, I thought I was going to die. Finally I said to myself, that's it! I have had it with cigarettes, no more.
About the third day of going cold turkey, I was going through nicotine withdrawals like crazy, I called them nicfits. Looking for help from my wife, I told her she too needed to quit smoking. She said she could not do it cold turkey and needed help. In the past, she had tried all kinds of smoking cessation aids without success. She then remembered an ad she saw in a magazine and a few minutes later she called me in to the office and said honey, look at this I found on the internet! I took a peak at the monitor, and there on the screen was a picture of what looked like a cigarette. Well, I am generally an easy going guy, and it takes a lot for me to blow my top. But after going cold turkey for three days and having nicfits like crazy, I just lost it. I got mad and yelled at her for showing me a picture of a cigarette when she knew how badly I was wanting one. She tried to explain to me, that it wasn't a real cigarette and that it was an electronic cigarette. But I didn't even want to hear the C word, and ran out of the room.
Later, after calming down a bit, I summoned up enough courage to do some research on what she was trying to show me. Not for me, but for her, as I wanted her to quit as well. When I begain researching the e-cig, I found that I can get it without nicotine. I decided to give them a try and ordered two starter kits and some nicquid for her and no-nic for me. They arrived a couple of days later, and after impatiently waiting for the batteries to charge, I felt aprehensious about trying it, worried that it would lead me back to the dreaded C word. To my surprise, it had a nice taste to it, and I could feel something of a draw from it, even though it had no nicotine. From this day onward, the e-cig has been by my side. It has become my pacifier if you will, and as long as I have my binkie, I have no desire to go back to stinkies.
For me, quitting smoking meant taking it one minute at a time. I would have a craving, then count for 60 seconds, then tell myself, ok the craving is over, now occupy your mind on something else.
Then I got the e-cig, and for me it helped to curb those cravings by giving me that hand to mouth habit and something that resembled smoke, without smoking.
For my wife, Lil Queen, well, she still smokes stinkies. But not nearly as much and she fills the gaps between stinkies with her e-cig.
I haven't given up encouraging her to quit completely, and I never will. As I better than most, understand just how hard it is to put them down.
I now feel so much better than I had in decades, my breathing has improved, I am no longer congested, I don't get winded nearly as easy, I don't smell like a dirty ash tray, or have that nasty smokers breath. I have also discovered that my sense of taste has increased.
I am not here to tell you that the e-cig is the way for your to quit, I am just sharing with you my story and how I did it. For each his own, and shall travel his own path. It is my only desire to inspire those that want to quit, to find what works for you, and to stick with it.
To those who are trying to quit,
I wish you all the best of luck and perserverence through this endeavor.
