Default Atomizer Help

Hey everyone,
I'm new to esmoking and I have a couple questions that hopefully someone with experience can help me with.
1. How can you tell that your Atomizer is gone?
2. What causes the ecig to for no reason get real hot when I'm not using it?

For some reason twice I've picked up the ecig and it was like it was running and very hot. I have to quickly take it apart to stop it from getting even hotter.

I appreciate anyone's help and I look forward to using this site for knowledge and helping other newbies like myself!!

The model is a 501.

Hi PartaMarta,
An atomizer will simply quit working when it goes out. Verification is most easily done by replacing the atomizer with another one on the same battery. Just be sure not to vape them dry, as this will cause the element to over heat and cause premature failure. Or place the suspect atomizer on another battery that is known to be fully charged. If you have an ohm meter, you can also read the resistance of the atty to determine any open shorts.

Is your 510 an auto switch or a manual switch unit? In either case, it sounds like your switch is sticking, which is causing it to run when not in use. If it is an auto switch, be careful not to over fill the cartridge as the excess liquid can seep into the battery and ruin the auto switch.
Manual switched batteries are sealed, so there is no danger of seepage in to the battery. However it is possible for the manual switched button to stay pressed after it has been released. Take notice that the button has returned to its normal height after each use.

Is this a Joye 510 or a clone?

to the Forum!

First, you say you have a 501. Did you mean 510? Right now, I'll assume you have the 510. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The atomizer is simply a tiny heating coil. If you get vapor, it's most likely OK. An atomizer will go stone cold when burnt out. If vapor is slight, it may be from lack of juice or flooded with too much juice. It takes some time to get the hang of it.

Not enough juice will cause the atomizer to burn out. You may notice a burnt taste, and very little vapor, and overheating atomizer.

Too much juice will cause the atomizer to gurggle, and also, very little vapor.

Are you using manual or auto batteries? Are you using e-liquid?

Overly hot atomizers are usually caused by;
1.) Lack of juice. Dry atomizers will overheat.
2.) Puffing too much. Over use will overheat.
3.) Sticking switch in the case of an auto battery.
4.) Sticking or bad switch with a manual battery.
5.) Some auto batteries have a built in cleaning cycle. The cycle will cause the battery to stay on after x-amount of puffs to burn off excess juice and contamination.

A bit more information about your model will help determine the problem. There is also information in the Troubleshooting Guide which is posted in the Reference Library.

Let us know a bit more on what you're using.

Cheers;
jd

Default Atomizer help

Thank You for your replies!! I have a Joye 510 Manual switch, and after I asked for help ( go figure ) I noticed on the site that I purchased the kit, ( Freshsmoking.com ), a statement saying the atomizer will self clean once and a while automatically and get hot in which at that time you need to take it apart and cool it down. Kinda strange because when it has happened that baby is way hot and I have to quickly take it apart without getting burned. Seems the atomizer would burn out getting that hot, but I am new to the game so I'm not sure what's right or wrong. Well hey I really like doing the ecig rather than the reg. cig. It's great to hear everyones tips and tricks, and again thank you for your replies!! Oh and I am using e-liquids, there really great!

I first started out with the auto batteries. All that I know of had the cleaning cycle. I personally think the cleaning cycle is useless, and I unscrew the attys quick if I notice the cycle starting.

You'll be happy with the 510.

hmm, this is weird, I use exclusively Joye 510 manuals and have never had one that self cleans. For one thing, it is quite impossible on a manual switch as because current is only applied when the button is manually pushed. And the PCM has no possible way of applying current without you manually pushing and holding the button. When you release the button, current is physically disconnected and it cannot stay on, only or unless the switch has physically stuck for some reason.

It is the auto switched battery that enters a cleaning cycle. This is contolled by a microchip that is incorporated within the PCM (protection circuit module) inside the battery. If this is happening on yours and you have manual batteries, then I would say the switch is sticking.

Even so, these auto switched self cleaning modes only activate after so many hits, ranging from 1500 to 2500 (depending on manufacturer) and the cycle is no more than 10 seconds. Therefore, even if you had an auto switched battery, this should not happen all that often. Plus given the fact that you are most likely using and rotating batteries in between charges, this time would be greatly extended as these batteries have no way of telling what the other battery has to say.

I am not even entirely sure the Joye 510 auto switched models have this feature, but I am not sure and can't say for certain as I only use manual switched batteries.

Are you sure this website said this specifically about the 510? Or were they speaking in general or about the other brands/models they sell?

If it were me, I would contact the company and see about getting a replacement battery for the one giving you this problem. Else set it aside and use the others you have. If you are using the standard sized (180mah) batteries, the 510 will drain them fairly fast, so it is a good idea if you consider youself a heavy user, to have at least two chargers and at least three or 4 batteries on hand.

Edit:
Quoted here are the usage and maintenance instructions by Joye for the 510, and no where does it mention this model having a self cleaning mode.

Usage and Maintenance Instructions

By JOYE Technologies
How do you smoke the Electronic cigarette?

E-smoking is different from normal smoking. E-smoking is a matter of inhaling rather then smoking. When you inhale, you should consider the following: Do not inhale continuously or for a long period. Do not pull too heavy or too fast or too many times in a short period of time. This will have a negative effect on the cigarette function Always pull slowly (3 to 5 times pulling) and let the atomizer rest in between for at least 3 minutes. Over consuming your E-cigarette will lead to malfunctions. I f you whish to inhale more or more frequently it is advised to use 2 sets of E-cigarettes at the alternatively. Do not use liquids or cartridges other than those delivered with your e-cigarette.
Maintenance

Regular Maintenance
  1. Clean the battery and atomizer by using purified alcohol to clean the contact points of the battery and atomizer with a clean paper tissue. By doing this regularly, your cigarette will perform better.
  2. Clean the inside of the atomizer with a paper tissue, to absorb remaining liquid.
  3. If you fell your cigarette does not produce enough smoke or the pulling becomes heavy, it is time to clean. Blow through the atomizer side, on the other side you will see liquid coming out. After this operation, clean everything and dry it with a paper tissue. Your cigarette should be working better now. If the cigarette does not perform better, go to point
  4. Take the inside of an old cartridge and pull it out of the mouthpiece. Rinse it with water and press it dry. Put it back in the cleaned mouthpiece. Pour 2 drops of hot water on the cartridge. Smoke without inhaling for a few minutes and check the cartridges. If the cartridge is brown, take it out and repeat the procedure until clean. Then put in a new cartridge and new battery. Your cigarette should be ok now.
  5. Self resetting: If you have the impression your cigarette does not develop enough smoke or the pulling is heavy you can try this: put he battery side in your mouth and blow on it. There are 2 little holes next to the LED light. Now your atomizer heats up and burns the rest liquid on the atomizer. Do not exceed 12 seconds of blowing or your atomizer will burn dead. After this operation your cigarette will function normal again. You will need to replace the battery and charge the one you just used.
Grand cleaning operation

Sometimes you might think your atomizer is dead, because smoke reduces significantly. In this case you can do the following:
  1. Take out the cartridge and mouthpiece and battery.
  2. Clean contact points of battery and atomizer with purified alcohol.
  3. Take the atomizer with the big opening up and pour purified alcohol inside. Shake the atomizer for at least 2 minutes, drain the alcohol through the small hole at the other side and repeat this at least 3 times
  4. Rinse the atomizer with hot water and let it dry for 16 hours standing up.
  5. After 16 hours, if your atomizer is dry, you can put in a new cartridge and new battery. Your cigarette will work normal again.

Thank You Jim and Royal,
I e-mailed FreshSmoking and they did say a 510 does not clean itself. I haven't marked the battery or atomizer as to knowing which specific ones this is happening to. I have 2 batteries and 2 atomizers and I'm switching them so quick that I haven't done that yet. So far everything seems to be working right anyway. I recon I'm just worried that all of a sudden I won't have a working E-Cig. I know one thing though, I am enjoying these compared to regular cigs.

Hm mm, new to me too. The only self cleaning model I heard about was the DSE 905, never knew there was others. I'd stay away from those, like to do my own cleaning.

My Joye 302's and DSE 801 auto batteries have a clean cycle ,it doesn't happen just laying on the table it happens when you take the specified puff.I cannot remember I think every 200.Its kinda nutz when it happens usually all three or four batteries are at about the same point so you you get it several times on that day.As long as the atty is not dry it doesn't seem to hurt anything in my opinion.
