Yes you are right Jim, you have to use iTunes to connect to an iPhone for most things, but not for everything, you can still upload and download pics and videos from an iPhone as it were a removeable drive.
This is why so many have turned to jailbreaking, once the iPhone or Ipod is jailbroken, Steve Jobs stranglehold is removed.
When I bought our iPhones, andriod platforms were still very new, and not a lot available for them at the time. So the only real choices for us at the time was an iPhone or a blackberry.
I have never been an apple or mac fan. But some years ago, I wanted to get Lil Queen an MP3 player. Microsoft Zune had just come out, but after playing with a store demo, I was not impressed and was about to leave the store when the sales lady asked me if I would like to check out an iPod. I thought to myself, what the heck, I could use a good laugh. But guess what, I was not laughing long, that little thing rocked. Well, several hundred dollars later I walked out the store with an 80 gig iPod in hand to give to my wife. She still uses that same iPod every single day. She has well over 6,000 songs on it, and we sometimes play it though our home stereo, and even watch some of the movies on it through our big screen TV. Keep in mind, I along with Lil Queen are what some call audiophiles. We do not mind spending top dollar for quality sound reproduction. Not saying iPods and MP3s are quality sound reproduction, but it works well for what it is used for. Heck, the stylus on my turntable cost more than what most people would spend on an entire system. When it comes to Audio, Analog kicks digital's butt. For us, our vinyl collection is priceless.

I forgot for a second, this thread is about smartphones. Oh well when you get to be my age, you are entitled to ramble a bit. I think I'll go spin a few records and rattle the neighbors windows. "
If it's too loud you're tool old."
