I suppose just about anything could become lethal or toxic if too much is taken, including food or water.
Caffeine and nicotine are both produced by plants as a natural insecticide.
And both have similar effects. Nicotine can be derived from many different plants and vegetables, but is mostly known from the plant Nicotiana - Tobacco. Where Caffeine is mostly known from the bean of the coffee plant.
Death can result from a caffeine over dose if taken in extreme amounts. Which is said to be about 80 to 100 cups of coffee, but would have to be consumed over a very short period of time. As a result of the half life of caffeine, death by coffee consumption would be extremely difficult in this manner. Still if one was to drink too much coffee, some very unpleasant side effects of caffeine intoxication can result.
However there have been reported deaths caused by caffeine over dose when consumed in the form of caffeine (pep) pills. The caffeine pills, which to the best of my knowledge are not regulated and can be found at the check out stand in many convenience stores and truck stops.
So why is it that it is accepted behavior for even children to consume caffeinated beverages called soft drinks?
One would argue that it is more about the manner in which it is consumed. As eating and drinking is a natural function of any living creature, where smoking is not. But with this being said, why was nicotine water so quickly banned and taken off the shelves? Is it because nicotine has been given a bad reputation, by being associated with smoking and is no longer accepted by the moral majority as a social behavior?
Then the flip side of all this is, why are so many nicotine products that are taken orally so quickly and readily accepted by the FDA and deemed as safe, to be used as a smoking cessation device- nicorette gum, and the patch for example. Not to mention other dangerous non nicotine smoking cessation drugs such as Chantix, which has been linked to many deaths already, and is so readily prescribed by doctors.
It doesn't take a whole lot of common sense to see that money talks.
