The whole protected thing is getting out of hand. The Chinese commercial bigger battery mods have the protection circuit built into the device, just like all regular e-cig batteries do. People buying the DSE-905 were replacing their new batteries because SLB ships unprotected batts. The units have always been protected, who cares in what fashion. With home-brew mods and expensive American mods a protected battery makes sense. But with all the scare mongering everyone is forced to offer 'protected' cells and folks are trying to cram them they aren't needed.

Forget the 10440's. Go with the 14500's, they are basically the same price. You will see a noticeable difference in vape quality as the 14500's will maintain a higher voltage longer than the 10440's which drop rather quickly into so-so category. Also note the protected 14500's are a tight fit in AA plastic boxes and the protection circuit also intrudes on the positive terminal. some trimming of the negative spring and some fiddling at the positive is needed.
Also note this $2.68 price includes shipping.
