When I read about the Empire Drip Shields I was, as a regular 901 user, intrigued. Fortunately, Perpetua. on the All About e-Cigs Forum, very kindly put together a group purchase which made buying a relatively small item from "across the pond" more affordable.
When my Drip Shield arrived, this is what I saw:
The instructions are very clear and detailed. They make various claims for the device:
- works as a heat sink and keeps the atomiser cool
- prolongs atomiser life
- tighter draw
- prevents leakage
The zip bag contained:
and the little pouch contained:
The Drip Shield is basically a ribbed tube with an o-ring near each end:
One end has a small hole on either side of the tube:
Using the Drip Shield
The idea of the drip shield is that the lower o-ring should fit BELOW the air intake (and hence source of leakage) of the atomiser and then air is drawn through the two small holes at the top of the shield (and juice is trapped in the bottom of the shield). In the case of a 901 the air intake is the small hole just above the bottom of the atomiser. This presents a problem with devices that have recessed 901 connections such as the Screwdriver:
You can see the hole is too close to the top of the SD for the o-ring in the Shield to slide past the hole. So I fitted a 901 to 808 adapter:
This gives room for the Drip Shield to slide over the hole.
With devices that have exposed 901 connections, such as my Super T Super Six, this problem doesn't exist:
This same problem exists for atomisers such as the 510 (or cartos, or the 306 with drip tip fitted), where the source of leakage is at the bottom of the atomiser. In these cases an adapter is also needed to "lift" the source of leakage so the Drip Shield's o-ring will slide past it. Here is a 510:
To fit the Drip Shield, just slide it over the atomiser and push it down fully. Then fit the drip tip.
Here it is fitted to my Mk1 Screwdriver with an LR901 and a Super T "Shorty" Drip Tip:
And here is the same combination fitted to my Super Six:
And here is Drip Shield and the TW LR510 atomiser fitted to my Screwdriver (with a 901-510 adapter) and a Super T Whistle Tip:
And for a bit of variation, the Screwdriver with a Cisco LR(1.5ohm)901 and a long Super T Tip:
You don't have to use drip tips - here is the Drip Shield and an LR (1.7ohm)901 with a 901 cart:
and here it is with a Hangsen 310 XL Cartomiser and Super T Shorty Tip:
What's it like?
I'm impressed - in all cases, the draw was improved (for me - I didn't need to enlarge the holes in the Shield) and (something not included in the advertising) QUIETER (especially with the cartomiser)
I've had no leaks - I was deliberately fairly cavalier in dripping but no mess ensued.
(I obviously can comment on the claim of better atomiser life yet!)
I had no problems getting the Shield on and off the devices either.
Overall - seems like a good idea which appears to work really well...
