If it has an inline battery then it essentially is running off the battery.
If it is direct without an inline battery, then it will run up to five volts, but it all depends on you power source. A 510 draws more amperage than most other e-cigs. So I'd recommend a 2 amp power source to run at or near full output.
2.0 USB outputs typically only put out 500 milliamps or 1/2 an amp.
So typically I have found 510 passthroughs not to function any better than their 3.7 volt battery counterparts, unless they are being fed with a power source that can keep up.
The ones with inline batteries, serves two purposes, because the amperage from your power source is only keeping the battery charged, it keeps from overloading the circuit, especially on a computer. The other purpose is to allow you to go unplugged. But they will not perform any better than a standard 510 e-cig battery.
The only drawback with the standard 510 batteries is that even though they are 3.7 volt batteries to begin with, they are stepped down by the FET switch. As a result performance is better when a 510 atomizer is used on a battery mod, whether it be a 3.7 or a 5 volt or higher mod.
Don't take what I said wrong, the standard Joye 510 is still going to perform, but if you are already looking for a boost in performance, there are better options to consider for this purpose than a passthrough.
Have you looked at the Joye E-go batteries? They will last much longer than a standard 510 battery and will out perform them as well. The new 900 mah eGo batteries will last for most, a full 24 hours of use between charges. the standard 650 mah eGo batteries will go for 5 to 8 hours on a charge, it all depends on how heavy it is used.
Since you are just starting out, I would just stay with what you ordered for the time being, I used nothing but for better part of a year before I decided to step it up a notch. Just be prepared to keep your batteries charged, and often. I never left home without at least a couple of freshly charged batteries and my charger.
